The following is a listing of various organizations that offer (usually Summer) internship opportunities. Unfortunately, much of this information is not verified or from last year, so you will want to write or check their website for updated information. I'm sorry there are so few listed, but I do not have time to maintain the internship listings (hey, I'm only one person! *smile!*)

Microsoft has information regarding internship opportunities within Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/college/ then click on "Internships." The Lewis' Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program is for students in science, engineering, professional administrative and technical areas. Internships are available for a choice of starting dates during the summer of 1998 at the NASA Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. Interns are given assignments in research and development, technical, ad administrative projects under the personal guidance of NASA professional staff members. Actually, I should probably call this one a "dare" more than an "opportunity" - Frankel & Anderson, a highly successful agency, has one heck of an internship opportunity. You can be guaranteed to learn more - and EARN more - with this program than any other. Go check it out - I dare you! Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Student Internship Program Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education Attn: Science/Engineering Education Division P.O. Box 117 Oak Ridge, TN 37831-0117 Phone: (423) 576-1083, Fax: (423) 576-3643 E-mail: sipatsdr@orau.gov Intended to support student research in exposure and disease registries, health investigations, public health assessments, toxicological profiles, emergency response, and health education at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in Atlanta, Georgia. This program is open to students who are working on a baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degree in toxicology, epidemiology, environmental or public health, medicine, pharmacology, or related disciplines in the biological, medical, or physical sciences. All programs operated by the Science/Engineering Education Division of Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education seek to broaden the participation of minorities, women, and persons with disabilities in science and engineering careers. Interns receive a monthly stipend of $1,350 to $1,650 (undergraduate student) or $1,650 to $2,150 (graduate students), depending upon academic status and research area. Also receive travel funds (limited amount). The off-campus tuition and fees required by their home institution (if any) are paid by the program. Internships normally last from 10 weeks to 12 months. Both full- and part-time opportunities exist. There is no deadline to apply, applications accepted at any time. Magazine Internship Programs American Society of Magazine Editors Executive Director 919 3rd Ave., 22nd Floor New York, NY 10022 Summer internships available at many different magazines. For students studying Journalism and intending to pursue a career in Journalism. Must be in your Junior Year about to enter your Senior year. Internships take place in New York or Washington, D.C. Please write for more information. LACD Communications Intern Nature Conservancy Attn: Recruiting Director 1815 N. Lynn St. Arlington, VA 22209 For Minority students. Must have complete fluency in English and Spanish. Must have experience in Journalism or Writing, English Majors preferred. Must have ability to make superior translations of documents in either language. Must be able to work independently and without supervision, and have excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail. For undergraduate students pursuing their Bachelor's Degree. Smithsonian Institution The Smithsonian Institution offers a large variety of internships and fellowships. When writing for information, you may want to request information on additional internships they offer beyond the one you are writing about. These are the ones I know about. Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design 2 E. 91st St New York, NY 10128 212-860-6868 Academic Year Internship: Internships up to one academic year are available. Minimum service is one month. There is no deadline. Available to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in art, design, architecture, or museum studies. Summer Internship: Ten-week in length at the Museum. Available for college juniors and seniors, who are majoring in art, design, architecture, or museum studies. Deadline is March 31, 1998. Minority Undergraduate and Graduate Fellowships L'Enfant Plaza, Room 3300 Washington, DC 20560 212-860-6868 Fellowships providing $200 per week plus travel costs to minority undergraduates; $250 per week plus travel to minority graduate students. Intended to fund research and study at any of the Smithsonian Institution's facilities or the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Deisng. Must be majoring in design, architecture, museum studies, or art. Deadline varies, please request information. National Air and Space Museum Internship Program Attn: NASM Intern Program Director, Room P700 Washington, DC 20560 202-357-1504 Provides up to $200 per week stipend to undergraduate and graduate students to intern at the Museum. Have large variety of internships available, in aviation, astronomy, geology, space science, museum studies, library science, art, and others. Academic credit may also be available. Deadline varies, please request information. National Museum of African Art Internships 950 Independence Ave., SW Washington, DC 20560 202-357-4600 Available for full academic year or just the summer. For college juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Must be majoring in African studies, art history, or museum studies. Minimum length is ten weeks, and do not always include financial assistance, stipend or travel allowance. May be assigned to museums other than the National Museum of African Art. When requesting information, request financial aid information also. Deadlines were December 15 and April 1, should be the same for this year. New York State Senate, Senate Session Assistance Program Senate Students Office State Capitol, Room 500A Albany, NY 12247 Up to 60 positions are available. Includes a $1,200 stipend to cover cost of living and related costs to being a session assistant. Must live in Albany, NY. Must be U.S. Citizen and New York resident. Only for college Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors, who are attending college or university in the state of New York. Any major is acceptable, although your goal must be in public service. Based on academic achievement and communication skills. Lasts from January through May. Deadline is October 1 each year. Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, International, Summer Student Program 432 Park Ave. South New York, NY 10016 212-889-7575 Approximately $1,250 stipend is paid. For undergraduate, graduate or medical school students. Eight-week long research internship in diabetes. Based primarily on your career plans and interests. National Radio Astronomy Observatory Summer Research Assistantships Edgemont Road Charlottesville, VA 22903 804-296-0211 20 positions, with stipend ranging from $1,000-$1,300 per month and travel expenses. Must be undergraduate student with at least three years of study completed, or a graduate student who has completed no more than two years of study. Must be majoring in Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering. Deadline was February 1 last year, should be same for 1999 but have not been able to verify. National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke Building 31, Room 8A-19 Bethesda, MD 20892 Have been unable to verify this information, however I've been told they offer summer research internships dealing with biomedical research, with hourly pay of somewhere between $5.00 and $7.00. Must be an undergraduate student, selection is based primarily on academics, high GPA is required, and deadline should be sometime in mid-March. Write for information. National Institutes of Health, Division of Research Resources Director of Biomedical Research Support Program 9000 Rockville Pike Room 5B-23, Building 31 Bethesda, MD 20892 Has positions for minority high school students providing experience in various areas of health-related research with the intention of increasing their interest in science as a career choice. Stipend or award is provided. Deadline unverified, but should be early December. Write for further information. That's all the internships I know about at this time.
