One of the best ways to learn how to write a college admissions essay is to read one that worked. Keep in mind that there are countless ways to write a great essay and yours does not have to look like the example below. In fact, your essay should reflect your unique personality, style, and experience. This essay was used by its author, Jeremy, to get into Yale, Columbia, Michigan, and Notre Dame. Why I Like To Lick Stamps On the last day of every month I have the bland job of licking an entire roll of stamps, and even though this assignment is without much flavor I am never happier. Licking stamps is just one of the many tasks I do as founder, editor, writer, and publisher of “Vermont Sporting News,” a statewide monthly newsletter dedicated to promoting outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and wildlife conservation. Starting my own business was probably the most difficult thing I have ever attempted. Initially I had to deal with skepticism from my friends and family, who thought that this was too big of a project for a mere high school student. Then I had to formulate a plan to attract subscribers and manage the financial aspects of the business. Even after I successfully accomplished these tasks, my problems were not over, for I still had to find time to research, write, and publish each month’s newsletter with a staff of one. Looking in retrospect at all the lessons I have learned, I feel that there is one which underscores the rest: the importance of enjoying my work. “Vermont Sporting News” is a success because it allows me to combine my interest in outdoor activities with my love of writing. Because of this interest and love, I am able to make time to complete each month’s issue. In fact the greatest reward for my efforts came not when I first turned a small profit, but when I received a letter from a subscriber which began with “Dear Staff...” and ended with “Keep up the good work.” I had to chuckle to myself; after all, I am the staff and for me this job is as much pleasure as it is work. Comments On “Why I Like To Lick Stamps” In the limited space that many colleges allow for describing an extracurricular activity, Jeremy does a good job of engaging the reader with his creative introduction and then explaining the reasons why he has devoted a lot of time to his business. Notice also that his business is not successful in terms of money, but this is precisely what makes Jeremy all the more impressive. He clearly holds an alternative meaning of success that is far more noble that just making money.
